Circuit City lost in the National Park Talampaya

In the National Park Talampaya, maximum pride of the riojanos at geographical level, is Lost City , the most extensive circuit in Talampaya. Its journey, as that of the whole park, is a trip to the beginning of the times.

From the city of The Rioja , for the Route Nac. Nº 38 until Patquía, continuing for to Route Nº 150, for finally to take the Route Nº 26. They are 230 kilometers in total. The duration of the trip is of three hours in vehicle and other three walking.

To visit Lost City it is necessary to hire an official guide. The visit can be carried out so much in van 4 x 4 own as in that of the park. From the office of National Parks we leave with our guide retracing the same one on the way to the entrance, until reaching the Route National Nº 76. The journey is very short. To the three kilometers we turn to the left for a path of red earth that drives us toward the less well-known depths of Talampaya.

The arid road winds for the lonely steppe of this place that makes 225 million years it was a true tropical forest with big lagoons and one nurtured fauna. We travel the dry channel of the river Guabo that forms a true freeway of sand two kilometers long.

It costs to believe that there where today it rests a dreamy lizard at some time they trafficked the first dinosaurs: in the park the Lagosuchus was discovered Talampayensis, one of the oldest dinosaurs in the planet.

To the being a sector little visited of the park, it is very feasible to see exemplary of the local fauna, like a maras couple escaping to the jumps, some fox slipping away after a bush and even whole flocks of gumps that observe us petrified and then they leave to the career when the boss's neigh orders the retreat. It is also possible to meet with the cruel and colorful beauty of a snake coral.

A crater of three kilometers

In the distance we see the old and reddish geologic formation of The Chapares that is part of the basin of Ischigualasto , declared Patrimony of the Humanity for the UNESCO. After traveling fifteen kilometers without more obstacles for the van through the channel of the river, we park the vehicle to the shade of a locust.

The walk begins. At the beginning, anything flame the attention. A brief and monotonous trekking drawing dunes with jarillales denounces that to some few steps it waits for us the dazzle. As the road it goes in light ascent, it is not possible to obtain a panoramic vision of what we have in front. But when arriving to the highest point an unexpected crater it opens up in front of us to the level of the floor whose diameter measures three kilometers, where our looked for Lost City is harbored.

To the foot of the mountain it expands without rumor an impure stream, hindered by brashes and sand; in the opposed riverbank City of the Immortals glows. This city, maybe dreamt by Borges for their story The Immortal, probably have in common something with Lost City .

Surprised by the unexpected landscape we locate ourselves in a natural mirador to observe the panorama from the border of the crater that truly is a gigantic depression formed by the tectonic movements that took the land down. To our feet it is developed a complex labyrinth of enclosures of sand and fantastic formations that resemble each other to the remains of a dummy city completely destroyed by a rain of meteorites. In their center, Lost City has a basaltic formation of dark color that incredibly form a called almost perfect pyramid Black Mogote. But the labyrinth invites to be discovered, so we descend seventy meters toward its interior for a simple flank of the crater.

When crossing these enclosures originated in the period triásico, we have the sensation that in any moment they will arise flying after the murallones a pterodáctilos group. Its labyrinthine plot, of immobile appearance, is knitted and it unweaves to the will of the water and the wind.

Through the labyrinth

Already inside the mysterious Lost City , we travel their bowels for a series of natural paths that, truly, they are the dry courses of the capricious currents of water that they are formed inside the crater in rain times. They are courses of water so powerful as brief it is their existence, since the sandy land absorbs the flows that enter for the east in the summer and, after deepening the crater, they leave toward the west originating the river The Greens. In spite of their short existence, the courses of water go changing the form of the labyrinth periodically, and they sculpt strangers forms worthy of a kaleidoscope that changes continually.

We are in front of a fragile world of sculptures of sand that it survives immune to the past, from the time of the dinosaurs. Under the oblique sun of the evening, when they light the red formations in the west, a silent domain allows us to assist with total clarity to the close friends beats of the heart.

The landscape differs enough of the traditional image that one has of Talampaya. To begin, the colors are softer, and the reddish one you rosy restitution. There are also other colors, as certain greenish tones and blancuzcos that prevail in some walls.

From the interior of Lost City we never have a panoramic vision of the landscape, what adds their mystery quota and suggestion.

After traveling true passageways and of having discovered windows of almost perfect quadrature, The Amphitheater appears toward the Southwest, a hole in the land that measures around a hundred diameter meters and other eighty of depth. This well, formed by the rain and the erosion, hides new and strange irregular formations that are discovered in turn when we lean out to its vertiginous cliff.

Finally you descends until a closed canyon called Colored Ravines for where you arrives until a slope of water that it forms a small jump with a thread of water.
