Misión Saleciana de La Candelaria en Río Grande

Cabo Domingo

This city of 38.400 inhabitants is the center of the industry, the petroleum and the cattle raising. Economic capital of the county, is head of the north part of the island. It is located on the north riverbank of the river that gives him name (the most important in the island). The population of Río Grande that in 1966 it belonged to 3.840 people, multiplied for 10 in the last 25 years.
Been founded in 1921, its birth, with the spontaneous establishment of residents, happened before about 30 years. The first inhabitants came from the closing of the mines of gold in San Sebastian's area, toward 1893, attracted by the foundation of two stays near Río Grande: the Primera and Segunda Argentina.

In the first half century of life, the city based its economy on the cattle raising ovina. In 1959 the era of the petroleum began, with the exploration of the Company Tennessee, what motivated a migratory current toward Río Grande.

Another wave of residents arrived among the years 70 and 80, with the Law of Economic Promotion that, by means of excuses of taxes and subsidies, it resided industries and residents.
