It is a fish inhabitant common of our costs and it shares the habitat of the species prey of the hakes; although prefers to be located in the funds, with habits evident demersales. It doesn't reach big sizes and the youths are generally the most coastal. Therefore who want to obtain bigger pieces they will go aboard. The adults only come closer to the most shallow waters to reproduce.
The body is robust, provided of a peduncle thick and high flow. Covered with small flakes in the whole body and in the fleshy part of the base of the fins number and anal. It is of gray color in patches of different tones, while in the stomach it is of a clear tonality and uniform. From the back they fall three or four dark vertical bands, and it also presents several stains dark in the body and the fins. The line lateral part from the superior angle of the opérculo along the whole body, following the superior profile of the same one. The head is big in relation to the body, since it almost conforms a third of its total longitude. The terminal mouth and slightly protráctil, is provided of fleshy lips. The inferior jaw extends a little for before the superior.
It consumes mainly crustaceans, especially crabs and, with less frequency, mollusks bivalve, small octopi and fish. When it has opportunity it also captures prawns.
