General description

It is an extensive flat region and barely populated desértica, with big vegetated dunes. The precipitations are extremely scarce and the high temperatures during the whole year. The vegetation is conformed by open forests that occupy the plains, while the dunes are hardly vegetated by species specially adapted to live in sandy floors. Among the few species able to survive in this inhospitable one half they are the Locusts and we Challenge them.

The fauna is not easy to observe, since prefers to move the twilight hours, when the ambient temperature becomes more passable. The peasants carry out an extensive use with smaller livestock, supplemented with the wooden extraction of locust. They still can it turns vestiges of the intense exploitation that suffered the native forest. The lack of planning originated that the area impoverished even more its scarce natural resources. The area reached a special transcendency to be the scenario of many of the writer's mendocino stories Juan Draghi Lucero. Even one of their stories, "The Clean" Hachador of the High ones, mentions specifically to the high dunes without existent vegetation in the place. It is also counted that in those impenetrable forests, took refuge the commander's riojano hosts then Facundo Quiroga.

Flora

The forests of locusts are in the sectors where the phreatic napa comes closer enough to the surface to be reached by their long roots (they can arrive to about 20 meters deep). they Conform this way galleries boscosas on the temporary courses and nuclei of mounts in the first floor among the dunes. The locust constitutes this way an important component from the ecosystem when offering shady sectors inside a great ambient desértico, allowing the development for example of some gramineous ones. Among the bushes we can mention to the Retamo, a species without leaves (áfila) of great regional importance in passed decades when it was extracted massively for the natural obtaining of zero; the Locust of Gump or Upa, an exclusive bush of the sandbanks of the Argentinean center-west, with remarkable fruits or chauchas red arrosariadas (this is with visible narrowness among seeds); and the Parrón, a strong bush with a main trunk with bark similar exfoliante to the Vine (of there their common name) that was discovered for the science in 1984, showing this way the ignorance that we have of our deserts. Other common plants in the area several species of you Hide, some cactus like the Puquis with artejos (the augmented shafts of the cactáceas) semiesféricos, and the Penca, with smoothed artejos, of spread behavior and beautiful yellow flowers.

Fauna

The biggest fauna is represented by the Gump, very pursued in the region, and the Puma or León that given the damages that it causes in the livestock are hunted by the peasants. One of the singularest species in this area is the Pichiciego, also denominated Antiquirquincho and Quirquincho Blanco. This armadillo, well distinguible of other components of its family for its reduced size and its delicate shell or "carcaza", is very adapted to the life in sandbanks. Of underground habits, their biology is very not very well-known. Among the birds they stand out the Partridge Copetona, a native inambú easily distinguible for their crest erecto; the Monterita of Necklace, small typical paseriforme of these desérticos, traveling restless the foliage of trees and bushes; the Pepitero Small, colorful well-known bird locally for it Veer-veers mentioning to the repeated song that frequently makes. Furrowing the sky in search of potential preys is quite frequent the Chimangos or Ibiñas, and among the carroñeros they deserve to be mentioned to the two jotes, that of red head and that of black head, which see each other until in the hottest moments in the day drifting for the desert. The small lizards or Chelcos are common. usually sees them to tomorrow half heating their bodies, finding them fully active before the noon. Although it is surprising, during the summery rains makes their appearance an autochthonous frog of compact body. It is an amphibian very well adapted to survive refugee during the periods without precipitations. only reappears to reproduce in the temporary puddles that are formed with the first storms. The tadpoles are developed there swiftly to leave to the terrestrial life before they dry off the ephemeral bodies of water where they inhabit that stadium of their life.
