This park is in the north center of the province of Salta , in the department Elk. The distance to arrive is from 200 km Salta , from Lumbreras 90 km .

 

Location

 

This park was created in 1948, by means of the Ordinance No.18.800, possesses a surface of 44.162hectareas, and this located in the north center of the province of Salta , Dpto. Anta.

 

History and antecedents of their creation

 

Before becoming the first National Park that aids the Yunga or Forest Tucumano-oranense, the King it was a stay (the famous Property The King) as many others of the region.

It was consecrated to the cattle raising, to which continued him in importance an agriculture of subsistence and a bound forest extraction to the cattle necessities. Their organization corresponded in great measure to a feudal system, as all the big establishments of the time.

According to the local tradition, the property was celebrated for the quality of its horses. But their biggest transcendency comes from the literary land, since the celebrated poet salteño, Juan Carlos Dávalos was inspired by its nature and its men to write some of its best stories.

The fruit of its sharp observation is appreciated in the stories that "The Gauchos", an anthological work integrate. For the grace or concession that it was granted in 1767 to the Colonel Juan Adrián Fernández the colonial authority, the stay was administered by its descendants up to 1926, moment in that it should be sold by economic problems.

Twenty-two years later, the National State acquired the lands to establish a National Park.

General description

 

The Park is located in a wide valley, in horseshoe form, framed by the high serranías of the Crest of Rooster in the west, and for the Sierra of the Picket to the nascent one, being located its entrance in a reduced one opens up, located in the South part.

To the mentioned summits that constitute the natural limits of the Park, it is ascended gradually from the interior, although toward the exterior the hills fall abruptly, with steps of up to 200 meters high.

The valley presided over yesterday for the helmet of the property and today for the Intendency and the abandoned Hostel, it is sprinkled in all their extension of smaller and lower lomadas that make it very broken and of difficult traffic, to be completely covered with forests.

In the entrance, following the one on the way to access, a special type of vegetation is appreciated, with Locusts, Cebiles, Guayacanes, Shade of Bull, Pruning and the Sierra Quebrachos that alternate with open places occupied by pastizales.

This forest type contrasts with the rest of the vegetation that occupies the neighboring hillsides, and it forms a contact area or transition between the vegetation chaqueña and the Yunga. As leaves ascending for the faldeos, begins to show the true cloudy forest or Yunga. The landscape sometimes inmerso among the clouds, believe a fascinating and magic atmosphere. Enormous centennial trees, as Cedars, Horco Molles and Laurels of the Skirt, remain almost completely covered with lianas, climbings and epífitas.

If the ascension continues, we will cross the Forest of Mirtáceas , until to leave the exuberant vegetation behind and to arrive to an open landscape, dominated by few species of trees. They are the Forests you Mount us, where the Alisos, the Pine of the Hill and the Queñoa form almost pure forests. Then we will find the grasslands of height, for on which the Andean Condors fly. Already in the summits, the amphitheater that forms the valley of the Park can restrain with the view in all its extension.

 

Itineraries

 

This Park has a very good offer of having traveled and paths, besides two areas of camping site free paymasters: one in the River Popayán and another in the proximities of the Intendency. It is an ideal destination for the observation of wild fauna in general and of birds in particular, being the months of May to November the best time to visit him.

The most confident animals, as the Chuñas of Red Paws, Foxes of Mount, Pavas and Charatas, come closer to the visitors awaiting some food. Paths of different longitude and grade of difficulty make to this specially capable Park for the lovers of the treeking. Those traveled more recommended they are: - Lagoon of the Ducks: located to 1,5 km of the Intendency, on the one on the way to access, it constitutes an ideal atmosphere for the observation of aquatic birds. - I laugh Popayán: located to 10 km of the Intendency, you consents through an on the way to passable rubble for vehicles.

The forest plain chaqueño travels in its first tracts, finding, as we come closer to the river, small serranías with Basal Forest . Already on the Popayán we will see the dense forest that covers their ravines, the enormous rocks that drag the growing and extensive stony beaches. - Green well: the road possesses 12 km of longitude. In their first tract it is passable for vehicles, then should continue on foot.

They will cross streams in an imposing wild mark, going by a forest of gigantic Laurels, until arriving at the small lagoon of Green Well in whose banks are some strange rocks, full with cavities that look like meteorites. If you continues the ascención, after 4 km from Green Well, you arrives to the Hill Chañar, traveling the Forest of Mirtáceas , the forests of Pine of the Hill and the pastizales of height. - Field Santa Elena and Cascade of the Wolves: you arrives through a consolidated road, capable for vehicles, of about 4 kms of longitude. It will be able to observe a typical transition atmosphere between the Chaco and the Yungas. The Cascade is an ideal place to look for prints of wild animals in the mud.
