This town of 2.540 inhabitants was founded by National Ordinance in 1915, and it is department head.

It is a mountain town, with services for field people and the tourist. There is in the place an important seat of Gendarmería. The town has an irregular layout, with some very sheer streets and with people of to horse that gives him a picturesque air.

In the outskirts of the town he lived their last years the sage and Croatian linguist Juan Benigar, the biggest expert in the culture mapuche of this side of the Andes.
