It is by the route nº 60 at 195 km from the capital of the province and at 962 m above the sea level.

The town is by the Andalgala river, which is the most important of the region. It gives birth to an agricultural oasis which uses its waters in a systematized way. There is a hydroelectric plant which makes use of the water to produce electricity.

Mineralogy is an activity of great importance due to the rich ore mines in the area, the most significant are the Del Negro on the east slope of the Aconquija and the ore of Agua Rica.

However the main activity is agriculture the production of raw material and its manufacturing. The industries are: the canning of food, dry vegetables and fruit, sweet production and olive oil.

Cattle breeding is developed in those areas where the shortage of water does not allow farming, it is used for local consumption as the urban centers are far away.

In this region sweet production and weaving are also relevant. In the Campo de Pucara, they farm potatoes whose seeds are free from any plague. This area has a great archeological value. The Inca empire extend over this area its power and organization, leaving as testimony its architecture in El Shincal, Fuerte Quemado, La Troya and Pucara de Aconquija.
