Walk to the Old Refuge of the Tronador

>

The "Old" Refuge was, during practically forty years, the pole of activities andinísticas of the area. All the trips guided by the glaciers and picks of the Tronador made use of their facilities. This is a walk intends going to Chilean Mallín and the Step of the Vuriloches and also to the Old Refuge of the Tronador

Because should cross the Meek River but that bridge doesn't exist some in the area of the ford used by the horses, a variant is used connecting the access path to the Saltillo of the Nalcas with the access valley to the place that we want to go.

For this the path is continued to consent to the Saltillo that Linda begins from Pampas, following a distance the vehicular road that she goes toward the base of the Tronador and the Black Snowdrifts (Southwest address).

Once walked near 400 meters from the Hostel, another road strays toward the left driving to a hanging bridge for pedestrians that it crosses the Meek River , about 200 meters but there. After past the bridge, the path continues in address west a tract and then toward the south, against the Confined Hill, where the Saltillo of the Nalcas is.

This tract is possible to also carry out with bicycle.

Following the path to the " Saltillo of the Nalcas" and about 300 meters before arriving to the same one, we will find a deviation to the right that leads to the old refuge - Volcanic hill. Following this path for about 20 minutes of march (2½ km) we find another path that is that of the horses that directly ford the Meek River without necessity of carrying out the deviation for the Saltillo that should make the pedestrians in order to cross the Meek River . In this connection we turn to the left. This path drives to: Step Vuriloches - Chilean Mallín - I Give refuge Old and to: Lagoons Cauquenes - lag. The Rosy one - Volcanic Hill.

The scenery of this place consists on a dense forest of cold" "forest composed by trees of Coihues and dense sotobosque of Canes Colihues, accompanied by Ñirantales in some parts.

After having walked a distance you arrives near a narrowing of the valley, where crosses the Stream Cauquenes and it continues going back it for the right of the cañadón. The path continues ascending in address west a good distance (about 45 minutes of march from the crossing of the Stream Cauquenes), until a deviation is presented:

The left brunch leads to the Lagoons Cauquenes, Lagoon The Rosy one and Volcanic Hill.

The brunch of the right takes to the Chilean Mallín, Step of the Vuriloches and Old Refuge.

After walking for 1½ at 2 hours following this path toward the west, we arrive to the "Step of the Vuriloches" which is the international limit between Argentina and Chile .

After a descent of about 20 minutes toward the side west of the step you arrives to the Chilean" "Mallín, a beautiful prairie mallinosa cloistered under the south hillside of the Hill Tronador.

Crossing the mallín toward the Southwest in almost longitudinal sense, following some consistent marks in stick pieces nailed in the grass, we will arrive to a peninsula of forest of Lengas, where is the small refuge of trunks of the Chilean customs officers.

From Pampas Linda to Chilean Mallín takes a long time among 3 at 5 hours of walk.

Leaving behind the refuge of customs officers a path is born toward the west. The path continues ascending inside the forest, overcoming the slope to arrive, after about 45 minutes from the mallín, to the limit of the vegetation. Continuing about 10 minutes more you arrives to a great clear hill from where a spectacular view of the picks of the Tronador is obtained and of the Glacier Blanco.

Old" refuge of the Tronador (South Edge, to 2200 mts/s/n/m.)

Taking, from the hill, the march address toward the summits of the Tronador ascends for a stonecutter until the slope increases a lot and an option appears for the hillside west of the edge (left) for travesear for the slope. Having passed a stonecutter, the path firstly it crosses a great pending mallinosa in an upward voyage in address to the Tronador. Finished the mallín you arrives to a stony basin where it lowers a stream. The basin is crossed continuing the upward line of the voyage until arriving to the superior part of the edge, in view of the beginning of the Glacier.

There, in the high of a promontory, last rocky point before entering in the area glacier of the Tronador, is the "old" Refuge of the Tronador.

The "Old" Refuge was built in 1937 by means of a vault of stones car amble and cement and asphaltic painting as external lining. The vault has about 3 meters of high and the approximate measures are 6 mts X 3 mts, the fair thing to be able to harbor some 10 people like maximum.

The "Old" Refuge was, during practically forty years, the pole of activities andinísticas of the area. All the trips guided by the glaciers and picks of the Tronador made use of their facilities.

The "Old" ones, you guide pioneers of the area they used these facilities assiduously during their adventures. Such it is so they were noted guides as Hemmi, Strukelj, Meiling, Weiskopf, Sonntag, Bertoncelj, etc that you/they maintained lives to the refuge, through the use.

In the year 1971 built fué the Refuge Otto Meiling, in the oriental slope of the Tronador. The most direct and short access, and the biggest capacity in the refuge made that the "Old" refuge Tronador fell gradually in disuse.

In 1996 the Andean Club Bariloche restored the external lining again since recovering it of a structure of iron reticulado and foils of zinc that which made it inhabitable holes in the vault they favored the formation of a block of ice inside the refuge. The advantage of this particular location of the refuge is that receives the tomorrow's first light and the last of the afternoon. The return is for the same road.
